We meet at the Walmart in Newport, Maine on the morning of 6/22, stock up on provisions and head north.

Plan on camping 3 nights in the woods. Exit the woods the morning of the 25th, and have lunch in bar harbor, and start for home.

Further plans will be discussed while getting drunk at ROTR.

Cool looking trip. Probably have to take 2 days on either end of it...it's ~14 hours from Pittsburgh to Waterville, ME...even longer to the starting point...

I'm planning on leaving the 20th, driving up to Portland, staying the night, spending the day with the family in Bar Harbor on the 21st, then leaving them the morning of the 22nd to meet up in Newport.

Before ROTR, im going to pick up a Delorme Maine atlas, and get one of the large Maine North Woods maps printed up at costco. I figure between the atlas, google earth/maps, and the North Woods map, we can figure out some interesting trails.

MNW has downloadable maps, and google earth KMZ's made up already on their website.

After we get a route planned, I'm going to attempt to make a google earth KMZ of everything.

Just noticed I may have to get a Delorean to attend this since it says the event was going to be 2012...LOL.

Sounds cool. I will be in the Maine North Woods next month.

I want to do this too. I graduate the weekend before the trip so it's doable. Funds on the other hand....

That would work.

What does the offroad portion of this trip look like?
To drive my Disco that far on LTB swampers would suck.
The KM2's are competant off road but not the same.
That is only 5.5 hours from my house.

My understanding is that most of them are logging roads or un-maintained dirt roads. The main roads should be fairly easy but I hear there are some logging roads that can be washed or rutted out and can make you work a bit. I'm sure you could ride the km2's and be fine. we have recovery equipment if necessary.

plus wife wants a g4! i cant say no to that. plus tires are good until they blow (my motto)

in all seriousness i wanted the steelies and i was going to buy new tires on those.... no sense in buying new ones for these rims if im not going to use them anymore.

I'm planning on running my at's, I don't expect that boggers will be necessary. Essentially, we will be on logging roads, and abandoned roads, which we can make as difficult as we want.

A few months ago, I got in touch with the guy on expo. He doesn't have his gps tracks, as the gps overwrote them. His advice was to use the delorme book, pick a route, and be flexible when you get there. I haven't gotten it yet, but he said all the roads are marked there better than google maps/earth. They just looked for the smallest, oldest roads, and followed the map. He also said it took them about 8hrs to get from the trains to gulf hagas, which is about the same distance from the planes to the trains.

About halfway thru the Expedition Portal write up, pretty cool stuff.
I will need to get some fuel cans as well.
I have ARB lockers and the KM2's are far better on the road than the swampers.
From what I have seen it would be easily passable with AT type tires,
Maybe I will find a set for road work.

It was a good read! I would be down for the trip but I cant make those dates, September would be much better if plans change for a later date let me know. Mybe I'll have the Airportable done by then.

Not that bad is only 7hours from my town to the walmart ...I will like to pencil my self and family in for this one , is there going to be any real offroading or just fire trails ??

Reading through the Expo trip report, do you think 6/22 to 6/25 is going to give enough time to hit both the trains and the B-52? I'm looking at my vacation schedule for 2013 and trying to figure out how I can swing this trip...

I think it should be enough time. I spoke to the guy from Expo, and he said to them a day to get from the trains to gulf hagas, which is about the same distance as the trains to the b52
