i want to put a tank on top of the roof rack to use for showers and fresh water to wash hands. i know its a balance between weight and amount of water available. I was thinking like 10 or 15 gallons should be good. 20 max. would like low profile 8 or 10 inch height max. prefer black plastic so it will heat in the sunlight. ideas?

This one looks cool:

Can easily remove the bladder to fill in a river. Protected from trees. Might not be very slim line but it's an interesting idea. As long as it is secured well it could be cool.

For the Maine trip?

I've got a 5 Gallon Reliance Water that I replaced the spout on. For about $15 in parts from Home Depot I've got a 10 foot hose food grade hose, and pvc ball valve, reducing fitting/barb. It provides great water pressure as long as the water container is elevated above the outlet.

When selecting a water container, I'd think twice about how big you go though. At 7.5 lbs per gallon, you can add a lot of weight to your rack pretty quick and it's going to slosh around making life interesting when going around bends, stopping, etc... Plus, tossing a 150 lb water jug/bag up onto the top of your D2 would just plain suck.

In Maine, I expect we will be able to camp near lakes or streams every night, so water shouldn't be a problem. You can pick up a solar shower for cheap, and just fill it in the morning, and leave it on your roof rack. The water should warm up a little bit sitting on the rack all day.

Although, for a hot shower, Mike posted this on dweb

And Ed, you'll have enough jerry can of gas on your roof rack, to negate room for a large water bladder.

that is a pretty cool kit. and yes. I will have the sand ladders for bridging, and 20 gallons worth of scepter tanks for gas on the roof. I already have one of the Coleman camp showers. Used it up at Mettowee filled it in the river. worked pretty damn good. check it

will also have a new set of tires by then and a second spare, both spares are going to be in the truck unless I can get some sort of double swing away tire carrier fitted.

don't buy anything CARB compliant, they all leak.

AB sells nato cans that are marked "not for fuel use" because of the CARB laws.

the only leaks i read about were the gaskets with the carb compliant spouts. check this out same design but different spout and better reviews.
