I'm part of Land Rover's survey team. I have done about 6 of these things over the past 5 years. I just did one this morning and I always find it interesting because you get some insight into what they are really thinking about. One of the pages of the survey asked for the top 3 things I would look for in the new defender in order of my preference. Here is some of the things they listed. Of course some we heard before some I have not heard before in the concept talks...

Plug in hybrids – Engines capable of being configured as parallel or plug-in hybrids.

Terrain-i – A scanning device that warns the driver of obstacles when off-roading and can suggest alternative routes.

Park Assist - Sensors scan the side of the road to select a suitably sized space and if the driver confirms the selection, the DC100 will perform all the steering functions automatically, with the driver controlling acceleration and breaking.

Spiked tyres – Driver activated spike tyres can be deployed at the touch of a button, which can be used for driving is severe conditions such as packed snow and ice.

Removable Touchscreen – The concepts have a central instrument binnacle mounted above the gearlever, from which all of the cars functions can be controlled. The control unit is removable and is equipped with its own power source, camera and satellite connectivity.

Tool box – A bespoke powered tool kit that is continuously charged using the vehicles inductive charging strip.

Telematics - Underpinning all of the vehicles systems is a powerful telematics programme that seamlessly integrates many of the vehicle functions and presents information to the driver in the clearest, most straightforward manner.

Waterproof interior – Land Rover have used the latest generation of performance materials to create an interior of premium quality that is adaptable, hardwearing and waterproof.

Solar top - The roof is equipped with solar panels to power on-board systems, reducing the load on the engine and lowering emissions.

Wrist Key – Micro chips placed in a highly resistant wrist band that allow the main key fob to be left safely in a slot in the glovebox, which deactivates the fob and transfers its lock and unlock functions to the wrist band, eliminating the need to carry the key while taking part in sports activities.

Wade aid – Sonar technology is used to assess water depth and advise the driver of optimum speed.

Driveline Disconnect – This reduces friction losses by sending drive to the front axle only unless conditions dictate that all-wheel drive is required.

Social seating – The concepts follow the Defender in having three abreast social seating in the cabin. The passenger seat can be removed, whilst the middle seat has a large storage area, thus creating versatility in the front of the cabin.

Removable sound system – An internal charging area is used to charge a bespoke removable system from audio specialists Meridian.

Intelligent stop start – This feature enhances the environmental efficiency of the vehicle by reducing the amount of time the engine spends idling. Land Rovers Twin Solenoid starter system offers considerable benefits over more conventional Start/Stop technologies.

Chill cooler – An inductive charging strip down the middle of the cabin is used to either chill or heat a removable compartment.

Power take-off - Inductive charging areas throughout the cabins and rear load spaces which can charge and power any number of modern electronic devices

Driveline disconnect - NO, this never works like it's supposed to due to lag time and other issues. Maybe optional via push bottom

parking assist - who cares?

The rest sounds good to me. I probably wont have the opportunity to own one of these until 2025 any way.

i wrote in my summary that i don't mind the technology but I don't want it to interfere with reliability. I said I have enough weird electrical problems with my D2 I can't imagine the tire spikes malfunctioning and not allowing me to start my truck or shift out of park while in the woods.

can't blame a guy for dreaming. It's kinda nuts when Jeep can keep the wrangler moving and Toyota has the FJ but we get zippo.

New rovers do nothing for me...

i think we will see a shift in that. i believe the brand will always try and keep it's off road prowess shown but the Range Rover brand is heading towards the high-end luxury urban brand and Land Rover will begin returning to the rugged rural off-road brand it once was. I won't be surprised if the LR2 is dropped and the Discovery 5 which i think it's going to be called Discovery again not LR5 along with the two defenders will be the launch point for another vehicle on the Land Rover brand.

agreed. the new line of Range Rovers are nice to look at in parking lots and on the freeway. But LR has NOTHING going on in the off road sector.
