Carnage - Headed out to a family wedding last weekend, the D2 decided it wanted to stay home.

I pulled out of a gas station and jumped on the accelerator. Everything seemed normal until I heard a loud bang followed by the hood bouncing up (dented from the inside, but not as bad as I'd feared). I immediately pulled into an abandoned gas station to find this:

I lost the fan, radiator (tennis ball sized hole in it), a couple hoses, upper radiator shroud, and maybe a little more. Not sure of the cause yet...either a bad bearing in the water pump caused the fan to wobble and hit the shroud pinning it against the inside of the hood, or maybe a broken motor mount...

Anyway, I'll post some more pics when I get a chance to dig into it a little more and decide what I'm going to do to fix it. (I have a nearly identical (but nicer) D2 that just needs a head gasket sitting at a friend's lot...I'll either pull parts from it, or start swapping off-road bits over to it and do the HG...) Either way, I guess it looks like this is going to be a busy week for me.

Back to running Crazy Red as my DD. cheers

Oh Shit!!! affraid I've seen this a couple of times, The last time I saw this the owener (a very attactive milf), continued to drive the DII down the freeway untill the engine over heated it and fully locked up the engine. That was a $5000 bill. I sure you'll need a new pump. Its wierd they dont give you any sign of failing before they go out like that, No leaks of any kind untill the fan and clutch fly through the hood.

I'm sorry to see that happened Dave. But look on the bright side, when you're done, you get to use that fancy brass bmw bleeder.

Definitely a broken motor mount and a bad bearing in the water pump. I'm just glad I was able to pull right over.

I went over to my buddy's place and started poking at my 'spare' D2 (which just needs a windshield and a head gasket) yesterday evening to pull some parts, but after firing it up I realized I can't bring myself to pull parts off it when it's so much nicer than almost any other D2 out there. Even with a blown head gasket, it runs better than my '99 D2 and just about every other D2 I've heard.

Probably the best thing I've done with the 'spare' D2 is park it and let the weeds grow up around it...it doesn't even have any shopping cart dings in it. (Something I'm to fix the first time I take it anywhere... Laughing)

I'll have my truck back up and running this weekend or as soon as my new radiator shows up...I already ordered motor mounts, a fan, and a shroud from Randy, and I actually have a spare water pump laying around here somewhere. (This is just what happens when you have more Discos than you can actually drive. Cool )
