Usually if a front wheel is out of balance it will cause a vibration thru the steering wheel - not a wobble like bad swivel preload or panhard bushings but just like that sex toy you have. If you feel it in the seat of your pants it's coming from the rear end. I'd bet roto flex as well as usually out of balance wheels in the rear are hardly noticable when you already have aggresive mud tires.

| Well I went to take off my tie rod end from my track rod and it's bent (already knew that) and the threads were chewed up. The end goes in sideways now - I wonder if it has to do with it being bent. Anyway Justin is sending me on one now and I should have it by Thursday so I can get the truck in and get an alignment and wheel balance done so at least the drive there is kinda smooth.
I'm not sure if my rear bumper is going to be here.
The bolt that holds my winch line on at the very end sheared so I have to drill and tap a new hole.
I do however need to clean my windows so I can see out of them since we will be driving at night.
check fluids and grease shafts and should be good to go!

| Well...it looks like the drive out to the Wilds and back was a little rough on Crazy Red... It decided to lose oil pressure anytime the RPM dropped below 500 when I got rough 3/4 of a mile from home on Sunday. The temp gauge never moved. When I pulled into the driveway at home the coolant reservoir was boiling over. Oil looks OK...still had some coolant in it.
I'm replacing the fan clutch and thermostat tonight...hopefully that will take care of it. If the HG is blown, I may just put the v8 that I picked up from Blake in it.

Well, I'm pressed for time right now, so dropping the other v8 in will have to wait. I swapped in a new fan clutch and a new thermostat, then took it for a spin. It had an ugly knock for a minute or two, but has sounded fine for the last 10 miles, so we'll see how soon that engine gets put to use...

| OK guys, anyone from the Spring Pines trip have pictures of the damage caused when Ed's bumper got ripped off the back of his D2? My new rear bumper is in the final stages of being fabricated, and I want to make sure it isn't going to have the same issues. Here's what it looked like as of yesterday... I've seen some of the pictures of the new bracket that was added to Ed's bumper and mine already has that as part of the initial design, but I'm looking for pictures of the point of failure on the frame. Was it just bolted to the cross-member? | |

Was it just bolted to the cross-member? Yes, it was originally only held on by the 2 crossmember bolts. And then from trying to pull it out by the hitch spreader bars, they bent so we couldnt bolt the hitch back together. In theory, it should be tied into the truck in 6 spots, and he only used 2 of them because of fitment issues.

| Whre the hitch bolts to the frame, above the axle. The bumper itself doesnt bolt there, but it ties into the hitch, and when the hitch it bolted up, in theory, the bumper will be made stronger due to the integration.
And check your pm. Sent you one a few days ago about this very subject.

| I still have that 3/16 stock at my house, we should be able to use a bit of that for the plate. We just need to take some measurements when the hitch bars are in, and see if we need any additional metal. | |

| I keep getting ideas for my rear bumper. After we do this to yours, I'm contemplating removing my hitch, cutting the bumper and integrating a receiver tube into it, and maybe a swingout tire carrier with co2 tank mount. | |

Yea I thought it was worth it for sure. Hopefully I'll get my power steering pump in tomorrow and then I will be able to actually test them out. It's pretty much the cost of new calipers, rotors, and pads for a D1 or RRC anyway.

| Jake - that Disco is looking even more bitchin with the 90 brakes!
Question on the allen bolts you are using for the axle shafts - why those and did you just get them from McMaster? I had a couple strip out on there rear of my 90 and might change out the good ones if they are stronger/hold better.

Thanks Don The allens are grade 12 metric so a lot stronger the the stock butter bolts. No real reason on them being Allen. Justin linked me and that's what then happened to be. I think it's an 8x45mm but not sure on the pitch.

I think it's an 8x45mm but not sure on the pitch. Butter bolts are right! I think they are fine with open diffs and stock axles but lock up the diff with a decent sized tire and they are pretty flimsy. Last fall I broke 2 after coming out of the woods and the last trip all of them were getting loose. Stock size is M10 but I replaced the stripped out threads with 7/16 and got some diesel look bolts from McMaster (WTF can't they make metric bolts as good???). I will probably bore the other ones out to 7/16 next time I have the axle or hub apart but nice to know about the grade 12 Metric ones. Might do those for the front when I do the Toy conversion.

| Finally picked up a winch, and got it installed. It's an Engo 9000lb. The solenoid cables were just slightly too short to mount the box in the center. And once again, I found myself cursing Nate Bottorf, as the winch was a little too snug vertically, and had to cut out the grill support. I just have to adjust the bracket I made to hang the box slightly. | |
